Double Ripasse Red Blend
APPELLATION: Languedoc
GRAPES: 60%Syrah 30%Grenache 10%Mourvedre
“Ripasse” typically means to press or squeeze in wine terms, and a little research says that a vintner has typically made the wine but held onto the skins, then reprocesses to add even more flavor (sounds tannic, right, or Amarone-ish?) to the juice. In this case, it’s also a clever bit of wordplay, and if you know this fella you know that’s worth the price of admission.
- It’s got a new world vibe even though the 2017 Double Ripasse hails from Rhône.
- Deep, dark purple fruit flavors, and carried to you with heavier tannins (which fade a bit with time)
- Blackberry or black cherry are most prominent, but there’s a slow, easy earthiness that comes as you get into the Ripasse. Definitely the Syrah back there, lurking in the shadows at first…

Philippe Auchere Sancerre Cuvee Les Deserts
APPELLATION: France, Loire Valley, Sancerre
GRAPES: Sauvignon
The Loire Valley in central France is home to numerous important appellations and sub-appellations. Its 185,000 vineyard acres include 87 appellations in Anjou, Samur, Touraine and Chinon, among other areas. The Loire River, which stretches from Nantes on the Atlantic Coast to Orleans, about 80 miles south of Paris, has been a boon to winemaking in the region ever since the Romans planted vineyards some 2,000 years ago. The river moderates the climate in the Loire Valley, which in the 11th and 12th centuries produced wine that was more prized than the wines of Bordeaux or Burgundy. Today the Loire Valley is best known for its white wines, though it actually produces as much red and white wine. The prestigious white wines of the region are Sancerre, Pouilly-Fumé, Muscadet and Vouvray. The white grapes most frequently grown are Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and Melon de Bourgogne. The best red wines are typically Cabernet Franc or Gamay. Though Loire Valley wines are widely admired in France, outside of the country they suffer from a lack of recognition. In writing about Loire wines, Hugh Johnson has noted that the “classic word for them is charming; the classic mystery that they are not more appreciated outside of France.”
Château Hauterive
APPELLATION: Médoc
GRAPES: Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon Petit Verdot
The Château d’Hauterive, dominating the commune of Saint-Germain d’Esteuil, holds a high position in the Médoc peninsula. Historically, the lands of Hauterive belonged to the very famous neighboring property of Chateau Castera dating from the 14th century. In the middle of the 18th century, the Verthamont family took possession of the estate for 166 years and created the modern wine estate. It was under their dynasty that the property appears in writings under the name of “Crus des Rives” or “Chalet d’Hauterive”. There is also a strong presumption that part of the estate comes from Château Bricaillou, then neighboring, thanks to an intimate history linking the two families through the marriage of Marc-Antoine du Périer and Marie-Thérèse de Verthamont in 1749. In a story more recent and after the people of the village, it would seem that the De Gaulle family came regularly to Saint-Germain d’Esteuil. The chalet would have hosted General De Gaulle for a few nights before leaving Bordeaux for England on June 17, 1940, the date on which Marshal Pétain requested an armistice from Germany. Since 2018, Château Hauterive has obtained HVE certification.
